The What and Why of SSL Certificates.

0

This article is designed to answer some common questions regarding SSL Certificates – if you have other questions regarding SSL, please ask them in the comments below.

What is an SSL Cert?

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer, as the name suggests an SSL adds an extra layer of security to your website and the way the server handles your websites data.

If a website is not using an SSL certificate – any user information sent from an online form to that websites server is transmitted in plain text, which obviously means if anyone gets their hands on that information; it is human readable.

If a website is using an SSL certificate – any information sent is encrypted using a key that is unique to the website, the server receiving the information is the only recipient that has the key required to decrypt the information.

This is why (n.b Only if if your entering data into a website) looking for the green bar and the address starting with https:// is so important.

I have a website, do I need an SSL certificate?

If your website contains a form of any kind (especially a form that requests credit card / personal details) then I would say yes, you need to have an SSL certificate installed on your website. This could be clarified as overkill if you only have a contact form that requests basic details like name, email, message for instance, but in this case it would be up to you.

However, if you run an online shop or any type of client login area then having an SSL certificate should definitely be high on your todo list.

—————–

Where do I get/activate an SSL certificate?

Most hosting companies have the facility to provide you with an SSL certificate (including us! See our range of SSL certificates here.) You can also find companies via Google that offer just an SSL certificate service, if you buy your SSL certificate with your hosting provider usually nothing more than clicking an authorisation email is required (except EV SSL Certs which require further information confirmation).

If you purchase your SSL with a seperate company they will issue you with your certificate (usually in a zip file including a CRT file) this is used by your hosting company to install the certificate on the server.

Once installed it is then the job of you or whoever updates your website to change internal links to pages that handle sensitive data to point to https://www.[yoursite]/securepage.html instead of the current http://…

With a lot of eCommerce platforms this can be done quite easily through the config file that includes a HTTPS path.

—————–

Why are there so many different types of SSL?

Basically because there are different levels of security and uses for SSL certs, below we discuss some of the main types :

Positive Certificate – This is a domain level security cert that offers protection for one domain (e.g www.mydomain.com), this certificate is the basic security cert but even so it does securely transmit data from your users to the server so is ideal and cost effective for many small businesses and low volume websites.

UC Certificate – Unified Communications Certificates are used to secure products such as Microsoft Exchange or other Server types, this certificate allows you to secure multiple domains and/or sub domains under the one certificate.

Wildcard Certificate – When you have purchased a domain (e.g www.mydomain.com) you automatically have access to set up multple sub domains (e.g sub1.mydomain.com, sub2.mydomain.com) a sub domain replaces the www part of your domain. A wildcard SSL cert will secure an unlimited amount of sub domains for one domain.

EV Certificate – An Extended Valuation certificate authorises not only your website address but also your business details, this gives your customers the extra peace of mind that they are dealing directly with the correct company. This makes it unlikely that any Phishing attempts would be successful as the Phising site would never pass the tests involved in getting an EV cert.

Read the small print for those hidden hosting and domain charges!

0

It seems that there are some great deals out there at the moment, but be warned you need to read the small print. You may notice that some hosting providers are offering very cheap domains and hosting packages, which on the surface look great value. However, it’s worth checking the small print or in other words the terms and conditions. Once you’ve purchased your very cheap domain and hosting try making a DNS change, most of our competitors will charge you €10.00. Basically then anything you request will be charged for.

Now we need to be fair here, because Hosting Ireland will charge you for certain additional services. One example worth checking is if Whois Privacy Protection for your domain is included in the price? Often the answer is no, so there is an extra charge if you want your details excluded from the Whois Public Directory.

So our advice is spend a few more minutes before you buy and check what you are getting for your money.

We sponsor Hotline.ie to help combat child pornography…

Hosting Ireland Sponsor Hotline.ieAs a responsible web hosting company we do all we can to ensure we only host legal content. This has been at the heart of Hosting Ireland’s ethos since we started doing business 10 years ago. We also go beyond this and sponsor Hotline.ie which is a free anonymous service which allows internet users to report content that they feel maybe illegal. See below the press release detailing the launch of the latest Hotline.ie report…

Hotline.ie 2012 | Annual Report – Covering Jan to Dec 2011

Report shows record lows in illegal content encountered online in 2011
Minister of State for Primary Care in the Health Department Róisín Shortall T.D. to launch Annual Report of Hotline.ie on Monday 16th July 2012.

In 2011, reports received by the Hotline where the content was assessed to be probably illegal under Irish law fell by a colossal 50.5% on the previous year, which according to General Manager Paul Durrant, suggests that international concerted efforts to combat child pornography online are making headway. This is highlighted in the Annual Report of the Hotline.ie service, which details the activities of the service during the period 1st January through 31st December 2011.

Hotline.ie has seen a huge decrease in reports assessed as referring to illegal child pornography in the year. This number fell from 183 unique illegal reports in 2010 to 83 in 2011. The number of unique child pornography reports is now at its lowest since 2001. Given that overall reporting to the Hotline has been similar to previous years, this outcome is yet another welcome indication that the average Internet user is not encountering content they suspect to be illegal as frequently as occurred in the past. This may be due to changes in the average web browsers’ habits which now largely revolve around social networking services where this type of content is not freely happened upon. Internet users, and in particular users of technologies such as peer-to-peer, are encouraged to be vigilant and report content they encounter online which they suspect to be illegal to Hotline.ie.

In April 2011, the arrest of a Bulgarian school teacher sharing child pornography online resulted directly from the police investigation initiated as a result of a report to Hotline.ie. The Hotline Analyst traced an IP address in Bulgaria from which a video of a scene involving boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 12 years old engaging in sexual activity. Technical information was transmitted from Hotline.ie to their Bulgarian counterparts making it possible for the Bulgarian Cybercrime Unit to match the dynamic IP address where the illegal activity occurred, to one specific physical address, identifying the user as a 34 year old school teacher in the city of Plovdiv who had been teaching geography to pupils from 12 to 15 years of age. The individual was arrested and during the search in his home a large quantity of child pornography involving mainly pre-pubescent girls was discovered and confiscated as evidence. He was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography.

Hotline.ie is now in its 13th year and continues in its drive to curtail the criminal misuse of the Internet and, in particular, to prevent the online exchange of horrifying images and videos of the sexual abuse of children worldwide. The Hotline.ie Annual Report is a comprehensive insight into this campaign. Hotline.ie is a service run by Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland and co-funded by the European Union.
