Oil Tanks Sold Online! – IE Success Story ‘TANKS.IE’

0

We’ve seen many products going online over recent years and we’re all used to buying everything from our mobile phone to our grocery shopping to booking our holidays. In fact, our latest research into the value of a website showed that 83% of Irish consumers believe that every business should at least have a basic website. However, there are some products that we just probably never thought we would see online.

What is different about your business or website?

With this in mind, we started to think about how some dot ie websites are trying to change the game. We wanted to look for businesses that are using digital tools and their websites to disrupt their industry. This particular success story comes via one of our accredited dot ie Registrars – Hosting Ireland, who recently mentioned one of their clients who’s really turned their industry on its head.

Tanks.ie has become the online market leader for the supply of oil and water tanks in Ireland. Who would have thought a few years ago that we would see oil tanks being sold online? Oil tanks were traditionally a product that was sourced from local oil suppliers or builder merchants. They often had significant lead times, especially if you were trying to source a specific size or capacity.

How did Tanks.ie use their website to disrupt their market?

Tanks.ie had a simple approach, a one-stop shop for everything related to tanks; offering a complete portfolio of tanks and accessories from major manufacturers, with free delivery anywhere in Ireland.

“It all started with the domain name. We researched the market, various brands and keywords, but to our amazement, no one had registered tanks.ie; the domain was perfect for what we planned to do.” stated Tony Murphy, Managing Director of Tanks.ie. “We already knew Hosting Ireland, also based in Waterford, so they registered the dot ie domain name for us and have continued to look after our domain management and web hosting ever since.”

Tanks.ie has a fully mobile responsive website that enables existing and potential clients to search and view an extensive portfolio of oil tanks, water tanks, chemical tanks, wastewater tanks and accessories. The website also features a TANKOLOGY section, where frequently asked questions and regulatory information is freely available.

How does this apply to my website?

Our point is that traditional ways of marketing & selling products and services have changed dramatically in the past decade due to increased web awareness and a shift in customer expectations. There are many businesses who wondered if their products would sell online, decided to ‘give it a go’ and found to their amazement that it was just the vehicle needed to drive them towards success.

Our key learning from this is that if you have an idea you should do your research and get started. It does not matter how small the idea or business may be to start with, don’t get too bogged down with over thinking everything. The simple clear businesses ideas are often the best and you can develop your online presence as the business builds, don’t try and get everything perfect from day one because you won’t.

So, if you have a product that’s not currently sold online maybe it’s time to start building your website!

The Value Of A Website? – Research Results by IEDR

0

The IEDR have published more useful information to help see the importance and value of a website, see below infographics and key data released today….

Key Findings…

• Irish SMEs with a website receive an average of 22 additional jobs a year, with each job worth an average of almost €1,100, according to new IEDR research;
• 71 percent of consumers are more likely to purchase goods and services from an SME that has a website;
• Three-quarters of consumers think it is frustrating when a business has no website;
• 80 percent of Irish consumers go online to search for information about a business and nearly 70 percent think a business seems ‘outdated’ if it is not online;

IEDR CEO David Curtin: “The benefits are clear: SMEs with websites stand to receive more work and make more money.”
SMEs with a website make an additional €24,000 a year compared to those without, new research from the IE Domain Registry (IEDR), the company that manages Ireland’s country domain name .ie, has revealed.*

In a big boost for business, SMEs with a website receive an average of 22 additional jobs a year, with each worth an average of €1,089. Dublin-based SMEs receive the highest average number of additional jobs (41), followed by the rest of Leinster (16) and Munster (14). Connacht and Ulster receive the fewest (12).

The research, conducted by Ignite Research in March, also showed that nearly three-quarters (71 percent) of Irish shoppers are more likely to purchase goods and services from a business that has a website.**

Despite this, only a little over half of consumers (51 percent) believe that their local shops and businesses are equipped for the digital age (i.e. have a basic website, have e-commerce capability). Indeed, three-quarters (74 percent) said they find it frustrating when a company has no website.

More key findings…

• Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of consumers want the ability to browse and research their local business’s products and services online
• 83 percent believe SMEs should have a basic website with contact details and opening hours
• 68 percent believe a business is ‘outdated’ if it doesn’t have a website
• 60 percent say they would shop with a competitor if they couldn’t find their preferred retailer online

Commenting on the findings, David Curtin, Chief Executive of IEDR, said: “For SMEs, having even a basic website is an integral part of doing business in the twenty-first century. The benefits are clear: SMEs with a website stand to receive more work and make more money than their offline counterparts. Being online means businesses can reach out to more customers, understand them better, sell more products and expand into new markets….. The internet has shifted consumer expectations. Shoppers appreciate the convenience and accessibility of a website, particularly if it offers a list of products and the option to buy online. Most regard the absence of a website as evidence that a business is ‘outdated’ and are frustrated when basic content, like product listings and opening hours, are missing.
Nowadays, selling online is a straightforward process thanks to a myriad of inexpensive, easy-to-use tools. With e-commerce, Ireland’s SMEs have access to their chosen market of potential customers 24/7, 365 days a week. This trade is worth billions to our economy and is set to grow substantially as more people and businesses go online for the first time.
If you’re not online, your business is effectively invisible. Our research has shown that 80 percent of Irish consumers go online to search for information about businesses. If you don’t have a presence on the web, you’re missing out on a huge number of potential customers.”

Next month, IEDR will publish the latest edition of its dot ie Digital Health Index, a biannual report which measures the ‘health’ of Irish SMEs’ digital assets, like websites, social media and e-commerce capabilities.

*Research based on a survey of 500 Irish SMEs conducted by Ignite Research in March 2017. The number of jobs and values are based on the responses of 133 companies that receive jobs or sales through a professional business website. Value is calculated by working out the median figure SMEs with a website said that they receive per job/sale (on average) from their website and multiplying it by the number of extra jobs they are receiving as a result of having a website.
